Description

    Finest Known Judd-634, Five-Cent Pattern From 1868

1868 Five-Cents, Judd-634, Pollock-706, R.7, PR 65 Brown, PCGS. The obverse features a design similar to that adopted for the three-cent nickel. The reverse has a large Roman numeral V in the center, surrounded by a laurel wreath, the motto is on a scroll at the top of that side with a Maltese cross between the folds. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Identical in design to the nickel Judd-633 above. While designated as a brown coin, the surfaces show multiple shadings of color including cerulean-blue, cherry-red, and brown. An exceptional quality coin that is most readily identified for pedigree purposes by a small spot between the right side of the date and the final A in AMERICA. The finest known of the three pieces certified, this is a borderline R.8 pattern. The only piece in the five major museum holdings surveyed is in the Mitchelson Collection in the Museum of Connecticut History, and it is significantly inferior in quality than this coin. (PCGS# 60634)
