1868 Three-Cent Nickel Pattern On a Thick Planchet, Very Rare

1868 Three-Cent Nickel, Judd-615 Thick, Pollock-680, R.6, PR 61 PCGS. The obverse is struck from the adopted three-cent nickel dies, while on the reverse the Roman numeral III has a smooth surface and is surrounded by a wreath of corn, cotton, wheat, and tobacco. The obverse is set on a cent-sized planchet, leaving that side with extra wide borders, but the reverse looks normal. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. While lumped in together, the thick planchet examples are considerably rarer than those struck on a thin planchet. Considered separately the thick planchet pieces would merit a high R.7 or perhaps even an R.8. designation. The surfaces are exceptionally bright from cleaning and have retoned a garish golden-brown color. (NGC ID# 29JG, PCGS# 60615)
