Extremely Rare 1869 Aluminum Half Dollar Pattern--The Finest of Only Two Known

1869 Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-747, Pollock-829, R.7, PR 65 NGC. William Barber's design for the Standard Silver half dollar. The portrait of Liberty faces right with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the top margin and the motto on a scroll in the exergual area. The reverse has 50 CENTS centrally located, surrounded by a wreath of oak and laurel with STANDARD SILVER 1869 at the perimeter. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge.
Among the many U.S. pattern issues, many in the Standard Silver series tend to "blend in" together with stock obverses and reverses interchanged over a three-year period. However, this particular pattern stands apart from other such issues as it is believed that only two such pieces exist. This example is apparently from the fabled King Farouk Collection. We assume this because although the piece was not photoed in Farouk and it is definitely not the Crouch specimen. These are the only two Judd-747s listed in Pollock, who conducted an exhaustive auction survey over a forty-five year time span. The surfaces are bright and deeply reflective with no oxidation or distracting contact marks. There are, however, two areas of stress in the planchet that can be used as identifiers for pedigree purposes. One is just left of the U in UNITED and the other below the D in UNITED with several smaller lines through STA in STATES. An exceptional coin, this is the finest of the two known.
    Ex: Farouk (Sotheby's, 1954), lot 1827. (NGC ID# 29LW, PCGS# 60747)
