Description

Extremely Rare French-U.S. Dual Denomination Gold Pattern of 1867

1867 French-U.S. Dual Denomination $5-25 Francs International Gold Coin, PR 63. A choice proof, struck in gold with a reeded edge. The obverse bears the laureate bust of Napoleon III, designed by Albert D. Barre, but no legend is seen on that side. The reverse has 5 DOLLARS 25 FRANCS in the center, with the outer legend reading OR. ESSAI MONETAIRE 1867. This rarity was struck by the Paris mint for the Latin Monetary Union Conference on international coinage. This was a companion piece to the 1868 American international patterns of the same denomination designed by Anthony Paquet (see next lot). These pieces were proposed in order to facilitate trade and travel in the United States and Europe. This is allegedly one of only four pieces struck in .900 gold. No recent auction records exist of this pattern. Of the highest rarity and interest to collectors of both world and U.S. coins. (NGC ID# 29K7, PCGS# 60656)
