1869 Nickel Five-Cent Pattern, Judd-683/A Design Combination Not Duplicated in Any Other Metal in This Year

1869 Five-Cents, Judd-683, Pollock-762, R.7, PR 64 PCGS. The obverse is similar in design to that adopted on the three-cent nickel. The reverse, however, shows a large, ornate shield covering most of that side with a large Roman numeral V, the motto is at the upper rim in tiny letters. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. A pleasing, brightly reflective coin that shows the striking softness one would expect on a nickel product. A few lint marks can be seen on each side, these mint-made deficiencies being responsible for keeping the piece at the PR 64 level. This distinctive design combination is not duplicated in any other metal in 1869. Possibly the second finest known example of this important pattern, none are in the institutional holdings of the ANA, ANS, Byron Reed, Museum of Connecticut History, or the Smithsonian.
    Ex: May 30-31 U.S. Coin Auction (Superior, 5/94), lot 1169. (NGC ID# 29KR, PCGS# 60683)
