    Description

Pure Copper 1871 Two-Cent Piece, Judd-1043, Delisted in Pollock

1871 Two-Cent Piece, Judd-1043, Delisted in Pollock, R.7, PR 66 Red and Brown. Regular die trials piece for the two-cent piece of 1871. Struck in copper with a plain edge. According to Judd the pattern copper and aluminum coins of this denomination for this year show the 71 in the date touching. These copper pieces were delisted in the Pollock reference, presumably because of the impossibility of determining their metallic composition without metallurgical analysis. Formerly cataloged by Carl Carlson in a Herb Melnick auction as, "Largely mint red with splashes of blue-violet and electric green on obverse, red-violet on reverse, nice fields, minor freckling. No auction records in the 1972-81 period, nor were there any for the aluminum J-1044. "71" in date clearly touching even without a glass!"
    Ex: R.K. Hoffman Collection (H.I.M. 11/82), lot 72. (NGC ID# 2TR6, PCGS# 61043)
