    Description

Another Probable Ex: Farouk Five-Cent Die Trail, Judd-1264

1873 Five-Cents, Judd-1264, Pollock-1406, R.7, PR 62 Red and Brown, PCGS. A regular die trials piece for the Shield nickel of this year, struck from Closed 3 dies. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Another of the very scarce five-cent die trials. Pollock only lists two specimens, again raising the question of whether this should be an R.7 or an R.8 issue. No others have been certified by the two major services (5/96) and there are none in the pattern holdings of the ANA, ANS, Byron Reed, Museum of Connecticut History, or Smithsonian. Lightly hairlined but the coin has subsequently taken on a more natural appearance with attractive, mostly cherry-red color with some iridescence seen in the fields. This piece does not correspond to the black and white photo in the Harte Collection, leaving us to conclude that this must be the ex: Farouk piece. (NGC ID# 29ZZ, PCGS# 61264)
