    Description

Full Red, Gem Proof 1875 Five-Cent Die Trial, Judd-1387

1875 Five-Cents, Judd-1387, Pollock-1531, R.8, PR 65 Red, PCGS. Regular issue trial piece for the 1875 Shield nickel. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Another of the rarely seen die trials for Shield nickels, this issue is listed as R.8 in Pollock, and deservedly so. There are no pieces held in the pattern collections surveyed, which include the ANA, ANS, Byron Reed, Museum of Connecticut History, and Smithsonian. This is the finer of the two pieces known by a substantial margin, the other grading PR 60 or so and owned by Wayne Wilcox. This is a lovely cherry-red coin whose only flaw are several tiny flecks of carbon seen on each side. An outstanding and wholly original die trial that should see spirited bidding. (PCGS# 61387)
