    Description

Very Rare Paquet 1877 Half Dollar Pattern, Ex: Gaston DiBello

1877 Half-Dollar, Judd-1540, Pollock-1711, R.7, PR 62 NGC. An Anthony Paquet design, the obverse features an unusually harsh appearing portrait of Liberty facing left, thirteen stars around, and the date below. The reverse has a stiff, sandwich board eagle with a scroll in its beak, and the remaining statutory requirements at the margins. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. This piece is from the dies that have the date placed just right of the point of the bust, apparently the two date variants were discovered by Harry Bass whose foundation owns two of the five known examples. This piece has bright surfaces and hazy gray patina. A pronounced die crack extends into the stars on each side of the date on the obverse, a rather curious occurrence on a pattern which saw such limited production.
    Ex: Gaston DiBello (Stack's, 5/70), lot 396. (PCGS# 61540)
