    Description

Rarely Offered Silver Five-Cent Pattern, Judd-1742

1885 Five-Cents, Judd-1742, Pollock-1954, R.6-7, PR 64 PCGS. Perforated in the center, tiny dentils surround the perforation and outer perimeter on each side. FIVE CENTS is prominently displayed at the top of the obverse with a small shield below with flanking sprigs of laurel. The reverse has 13 stars around the center with UNITED STATES OF AMERICA taking up most of the available space, the date below. Struck in silver with a plain edge.
Silver nickel patterns are of the highest rarity and desirability. Only six such patterns are listed in Judd and Pollock, three of which are R.7 and the other three R.8. None are in the museum holdings surveyed for this auction. The graders at PCGS have not certified a J-466A, 518, or a 579, all of which are R.8. A single J-583 has been graded, a PR 55, an issue Pollock correctly rates as R.8. The J-579 is also an R.8 with a single PR 61 known, a coin believed in the collection of Wayne Wilcox. That leaves only the J-1742 as the only silver nickel pattern the collector has a reasonable chance of obtaining.
The surfaces of this piece have a bright, chrome-like appearance with absolutely no trace of color. Currently (5/96) tied with two other pieces as the finest certified. (NGC ID# 2ABW, PCGS# 61742)

Had we endeavored to sell it without your support, it would have taken us at least 10 lifetimes, i.e. it would have been impossible.
