George Morgan's "Shield Earring" Dollar, Judd-1702

1882 "Shield Earring" Dollar, Judd-1702, Pollock-1904, R.7, PR 63 PCGS. George Morgan's famous "Shield Earring" design that features the head of Liberty facing right, her hair held down "like a skull cap" by a band with LIBERTY inscribed on it. Liberty wears shield-shaped earrings. The reverse shows a defiant eagle clutching an olive branch and arrows. The statutory requirements are scattered about each side in the usual places. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. One of the most famous and highly sought-after pattern issues in all of U.S. numismatics, the "Shield Earring" design is no rarer than many other patterns, but its impressive price is explained by the sheer popularity of Morgan's design motif. This PR 63 piece derives its grade from a dull coating of gray patina that covers each side, patina that when held under a light source also reveals bright rose and blue colors as well, but these are admittedly well subdued. (PCGS# 61702)
