    Description

Superb Cameo 1883 Liberty Nickel Pattern, Proof 67

1883 Nickel, Judd-1707, Pollock-1911, R.6-7, PR 67 PCGS. The head of Liberty on the obverse is the same as that employeed on regular issue 1883 nickels, but UNITED STATES OF AMERICA surrounds it instead of thirteen stars, the date, 1883, is below. The reverse is inscribed with 75N. 25C. centered within a wreath of corn and cotton. FIVE is above, CENTS is below, thirteen stars are arranged seven left and six right. Struck in nickel (magnetic composition, pure nickel) with a plain edge. When one examines this rare pattern, the first thing that comes to mind is it is a modern issue that was struck in the last couple of years. "Black" mirrored fields reflect against deeply frosted devices yielding a remarkable cameo effect on both sides. There is no toning to obstruct any of the glittering brilliance this specimen possesses. For pedigree purposes, a tiny lintmark is seen to the left of Liberty's chin in the field, but this does not detract from the appearance of this superb gem. (PCGS# 61707)
