    Description

Aluminum Striking Using Experimental Nickel and Copper Dies, Judd-1709

1883 Five-Cents, Judd-1709, Pollock-1913, R.7, PR 66 PCGS. Charles Barber's head of Liberty faces left, the date below, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA at the margin. The reverse indicates the use of experimental dies with 75 N./25 C. in the center, surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, FIVE CENTS at the top and bottom margins with seven stars left and six right. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. The surfaces overall are bright and show no traces of oxidation. A few wispy hairlines can be faintly detected with a glass but do not affect the overall visual appeal of the coin. For pedigree purposes a planchet flake is noted at the reverse margin at 3 o'clock. A high R.7 coin that is probably the finest known, the only close rival being the piece held in the ANA's pattern collection. (PCGS# 61709)
