Description

    Two-Thirds Copper Experimental Alloy for the 1883 Five-Cent, Judd-1712

1883 Five-Cents, Judd-1712, Pollock-1916, R.6, PR 65 PCGS. The central device is Charles Barber's design for the Liberty nickel adopted this year, the date is below, and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the perimeter. The reverse bears the experimental alloy notation, 33 N./67 C., surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn, FIVE CENTS at the upper and lower margin is separated by seven stars left and six right. Struck in the experimental alloy of 33% nickel, 67% copper with a plain edge. The fields are well mirrored with mildly frosted devices. Just a touch of light golden toning is seen over each side. A few tiny planchet flakes are noted. Tiny flecks of carbon can also be seen with magnification. Undoubtedly from the hoard of 16 pieces that passed from William Woodin to F.C.C. Boyd to Abe Kosoff, with many of these subsequently purchased by Sol Kaplan. (PCGS# 61712)
