Possible Finest Known Judd-1714, 1883 Pattern Nickel

1883 Five-Cents, Judd-1714, Pollock-1919, R.6, PR 66 PCGS. The central obverse device is the same as that used by Barber on the Liberty nickel beginning in 1883. In fact, the only differences between this and a regular issue is the addition of the word LIBERTY at the top of the obverse, its removal from the coronet, and smaller stars. The reverse is of the regular issue type for 1883. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Struck from highly polished dies, the static electricity from the rag used to wipe the dies caused several pieces of thread to be struck into the surface of the coin, most notably an S-shaped lint mark on the nose of Liberty and another, smaller one in the field above the hair bun. Deeply reflective with good frost on the devices, the piece is virtually free from color. One of the finest examples known with none graded higher by PCGS (5/96). (NGC ID# 2ABA, PCGS# 61714)
