    Interesting 1885 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1747, PR 64

1885 Snowden Dollar, Judd-1747, Pollock-1959, R.6, PR 64 NGC. The obverse and reverse design is the same as was used on regular issue Morgan dollars, but the experimental edge is lettered, not reeded. The edge design, in raised figures, appears as: * * * * * * E */PLURIBUS * / UNUM * * * * * *. The collar containing the edge lettering was composed of three equal segments, each with an arc of 120 degrees, equal to one-third of the circumference. Struck in silver. This specimen is toned in rich coppery-gold hues, so much so that one might mistake it for a copper striking at first glance, and exhibits flashes of bright blue iridescence at the borders. As an editorial aside, we really cannot understand the logic behind the placement of a Snowden dollar in a plastic holder where the numismatically vital area of the coin cannot be viewed.
