    Description

1882 Shield Nickel Pattern in Aluminum, Judd-1695

1882 Five-Cents, Judd-1695, Pollock-1897, R.7, PR 65 PCGS. Shield nickel-like design only missing the ball at the bottom of the shield. Otherwise the same as the adopted design. Struck in aluminum with a plain edge. Struck from heavily striated dies, the effects of which can be seen in the fields, and a result of which is thinning at the tops of several of the letters on the reverse. Deeply reflective fields, the surfaces are mostly bright with just the slightest touch of cloudiness. This is believed to be the finest example known of this rare pattern. It is also likely that the J-1695 is actually an R.8 issue. Pollock lists only three pieces and if that is all there are, then it would be R.8. If there are 4 or 5 coins (which is doubtful) it would rate as a high R.7. In any case, no coins have stepped forth to challenge the condition of this lovely specimen. (PCGS# 61695)
