    Description

1896 Five-Cents, Judd-1771, Pollock-1986, R.6 PR 65 PCGS. The always-popular pattern design of 1896 that features a large shield in the center of the obverse with crossed poles behind. The reverse has a large numeral 5 surrounded by a curved olive sprig. Struck in pure nickel (and magnetic as such) with a plain edge. We know all too well the problems the mint experienced fully striking nickel coinage beginning in 1866 with a 25% nickel composition. It is difficult to imagine how the mint could produce a coin composed of pure nickel. Yet, here is such a coin, and strange to say, there is no evidence of striking weakness. The fields are only moderately reflective, as often seen on nickel proofs, the surfaces are clean and show only a light gray-brilliant patina, probably very much like the coin appeared when new one hundred years ago. (PCGS# 61771)
