Description

Attractive "1792" Dickeson "Die Trial" Piece

"1792" Die Trial, Appendix C in Judd, Pollock-6001, MS 63 Red and Brown. The obverse features an eagle perched on top of a rock with plain, unornamented fields. The reverse reads: TRIAL PIECE DESIGNED FOR UNITED STATES CENT 1792. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Struck by Dr. Montroville Dickeson sometime in the 1850s, the obverse die was actually intended for use as an embossing stamp for revenue paper in 1816. Dickeson confused this design with the Eagle cent of 1792, and struck off an unknown number of these "die trials." The surfaces are mostly brown but do show bits of original mint luster surrounding the devices. Lightly spotted.

Coin Index Numbers: (PCGS# 61800, Greysheet# 14655)
