    Description

1915 Panama-Pacific Die Trial, The Fifth Impression--Ex: Farouk; 1979 ANA

1915 Panama-Pacific Gold Dollar, Judd-1793A, Pollock-2033, R.7, PR 62 PCGS. Struck from the regular dies for the Pan-Pac gold dollar but lacking the S-mintmark. Struck in gold with a plain edge.
These trial pieces were alluded to by Judd who quoted Farran Zerbe as stating that they "may have been struck as trial pieces in the Philadelphia Mint by the instructions of the (then) Secretary of the Treasury, who was a coin collector." Nine of these trial pieces were sold in New England's 1979 ANA Sale, but only two had plain edges. This is the fifth impression struck, and it was also cataloged as State C and weighed 34.3 grains. Three die cracks are seen on the left side of the obverse and the coin also shows rich reddish-coppery color which was common to most of the pieces in this original group. Light slide marks are seen on the obverse and are consistent with the coin's grade. Of the greatest rarity and importance to both the pattern and commemorative collector.
    Ex: Farouk Collection (Sotheby's, 1954), lot 288; 1979 ANA Sale (NERCA, 7/79), lot 1369. (PCGS# 61793)
