    Description

1853 Die Trial Struck in Billon, Pollock-181

Undated (1853) Small Cent, Appendix A in Judd, Pollock-181, R.7, PR 64. The obverse is blank with tiny denticles and a squared rim around. The reverse is simply inscribed ONE CENT in the center and surrounded by a laurel wreath. Struck in billon with a plain edge. Weight: 1.87 grams (28.85 grains).
Misattributed by the consignor as a copper piece, the composition was definitely determined on May 12 of this year by Metallurgical Engineering Services of Richardson, Texas who found the coin to be composed of 57.45% silver and 42.55% copper. Fully struck, the surfaces have taken on a deep gray and blue patina that is unquestionably original. A rare die trial that appears to be limited to 5-6 pieces in all grades.
Accompanied by a two-page analysis of the coin's composition by Metallurgical Engineering Services. (PCGS# 60181)

The outcome of the auction far exceeded my best hopes and would not likely have been as successful with out your sound advice on where to present the coin and how best to set the reserve. Throughout the process your availability , support and knowledge were exceptional.
