Description

1954 Farouk Catalog and Other Personal Numismatic Reference Books and Memorabilia of Maurice A. Storck. Maurice A. Storck's passion for numismatics began when he was just a boy of about 10 years, and it stayed with him through his service in the armed forces during World War II, culminating in his later life when he became an internationally recognized coin dealer. Storck was a contributor to A Guide Book of United States Coins for 36 years, and he was one of just a few American numismatists to be invited to participate in the Egyptian government's sale of the collection of King Farouk, in Cairo in 1954. The Farouk sale went on to be one of Storck's fondest memories of his numismatic career. In an interview for Arizona Senior World in January 1994, Storck reminisced:

"I bought more than one-third of Farouk's regular-issue coins. Farouk got out with the jewels and the ancient coins. He had his collection crated and ready to move when the army moved in. So he jumped on his yacht and beat it, leaving the antiques, coins and stamps. ... He had one of the biggest collections in the world -- he had the Red Book almost complete...He had possibly the largest stamp collection in the world. It was sold just before the coins."

The following reference books and other memorabilia from Storck's personal library, including his personally annotated copy of the February 1954 Farouk catalog, represent but a glimpse into a lifetime of devotion to the pursuit of numismatics, not only as a dealer, but also a collector and a mentor.
