    Eric P. Newman's Revision Copies
Of Important Works on Colonial Numismatics

Newman, Eric P. Copies of Books and Articles by Eric P. Newman Maintained with Additions and Corrections for Future Use by the Author. Includes the following: Coinage for Colonial Virginia (New York: ANS, 1956); "The Continental Dollar of 1776 Meets Its Maker" (The Numismatist, August 1959); The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling (New York: ANS, 1959); "A Recently Discovered Coin Solves a Vermont Numismatic Enigma" (Centennial Publication of the American Numismatic Society, New York: ANS, 1958); "Nature Printing on Colonial and Continental Currency" (The Numismatist, February 1964); and Studies on Money in Early America (New York: ANS, 1976). Materials generally very good.

Eric P. Newman's revision copies of several important works. The extent of revision and correction varies widely: the 1959 Numismatist article on the 1776 Continental Currency dollar includes a few minor edits, as does his offprint of the "Vermont Numismatic Enigma" article; his offprint of the 1964 Numismatist article on nature printing on early paper money is much more substantively revised and rewritten, while the Coinage for Colonial Virginia volume is simply updated as new information came to light. The Secret of the Good Samaritan Shilling is somewhat extensively revised, with some notes laid in. The copy of the 1976 Studies on Money in Early America volume, including two important articles by Newman, contains the most revisions. This volume resembles the 1804 dollar book below in that a number of inserts are laid in or actually glued into the gutter or directly onto pages. The article on Bungtown Halfpence in particular has much new material added and a fair amount of rewriting; the piece on the gold 1792 Washington piece has only one substantive note added. A very interesting and significant lot.
    Estimate $1,000.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
