    Eric P. Newman Research Files:
    The Fugio Copper Coinage

Newman, Eric P. Research Files on Fugio Coppers. Two boxes of correspondence, photographs, original and photocopied publications, clippings, manuscripts, drafts, and other assorted items regarding the Fugio copper coinage of 1787 and related pieces. Thousands of pages present. Materials are generally well-preserved.

Eric P. Newman's first article on early American coinage was "Varieties of the Fugio Cent," which appeared in the January-February 1949 issue of Wayte Raymond's Coin Collector's Journal. It was reissued in 1952 to accompany his work on the 1776 Continental Currency coinage, and remained a favorite subject of Newman's throughout his life. Nearly 60 years later, in 2008, he revisited the subject with a book-length work, United States Fugio Copper Coinage of 1787. The research files present in this lot include: drafts for Newman's original 1949 article on Fugio coppers; correspondence related to Fugio copper dies in the ANS collection; original negative and positive photographic plates for the 1949 publication; several hundred pages of Newman's research notes on Fugio coppers, mostly handwritten; several hundred pieces of correspondence on Fugio coppers; photostat copies of the Journals of the Continental Congress received from the General Services Administration; material on Fugios taken from various volumes of the Colonial Newsletter; photographs of Fugios received from Ken Bressett; Newman's "clip file" of published material related to the Fugio coppers, including pages torn from journals or auction catalogues, articles, photocopies from books, etc.; photocopy file of "Jarvis-Bolton Correspondence 1788-1789"; various plaster, wax, and aluminum foil impressions of coins, along with many additional photographs; the first draft of the 2008 volume, as well as two additional drafts; bookplates, some signed, intended for use in the 2008 volume; and Newman's corrections copy of the published 2008 volume. An important research archive.
    Estimate $5,000.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
