Afonso VI revalidation 500 Reis ND (1663) VF35 NGC, KM36, Russo-083, Gomes-45.03. A Portugal Joao IIII Porto 400 Reis countermarked with a crowned 500 stamp per law of March 22, 1663 (and later per edict of July 7, 1663 in Brazil) to raise its value 25% up to 500 Reis. Host coin Very Fine, countermark Extremely Fine and choice. A most attractive specimen of this charming countermarked issue, on a very scarce host coin, substantially more elusive than its Lisbon counterpart. Many of the recently offered examples have been either low grade or sea-salvaged, making the present example very desirable. Note that KM has the wrong plate for this issue since it illustrates the later 1688 overstruck issue (see our description of following lot).Auction Info
