Description

Alfonso VI Counterstamped 125 Reis ND (1663) VF Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, KM30, LMB-64, Gomes-10.04. Type IV crowned "125" countermark (UNC Strong), struck on an earlier Portugal Tostao from the Porto mint. An evasive issue and the rarest of the type IV counterstamps, seen only a handful of times crossing the auction block in the last two decades, last seen at Heritage in April of 2010 when one was offered in the Paulistana Collection. Battleship-gray appearances and a generally pleasing aesthetic define this example, saltwater damaged surfaces notwithstanding.
