    Description

Cuiaba. 960 Reis (1821), 960 over C counterstamp, KM352, struck on a Bolivia 8 Reales 1804 PJ-PTS, AU58 NGC. This is the finest 960 Reis Cuiaba counterstamp we have come across. The stamp itself is absolutely mint state with full round strikes on both sides. The patina is old an even on both host coin and the stamp. The village of Cuiaba in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso was authorized in 1821 to counterstamp Hispanic 8 Reales in order to raise their value from 750 Reis to 960 Reis. This was a pretty remote area of Brazil at the time and very few coins made it to Cuiaba, hence these counterstamps are rarely seen.
