Description
Outstanding Dobra from the Bahia Mint
Joao V gold 12800 Reis 1729-B, KM141, Russo-100, Gomes-135.02, AU Details NGC, repaired. 2nd Shield Type. The RLM collection features all 3 dates, 1727, 1729 and 1730 of the second reverse variety, the so-called "Sea Horse" reverse (from the shape of the shield ornaments). Strong date and mint mark and flawless rims. 1729 is the rarest of the three dates and an extremely elusive issue overall. The only recent record of the same type and date is from January 2011, when we sold an uncertified "XF-AU" piece for $77,625.00. Although the reverse may be better on the January 2011 coin, the obverse of the RLM specimen is clearly superior. An incredibly rare piece and one of the (many) highlights of the RLM Collection. From The RLM Collection
