Description
An RLM Key Dobrao
João V gold 20000 Reis (Dobrão) 1724-M AU58 NGC, Minas
Gerais mint, KM117, LMB-248, Fr-33. The rarest date in this iconic
four-year series notable for the incredibly high gold content
present in a coin struck for commerce. Though falling just shy of a
Mint State assignment, Choice AU specimens as nice as seen here are
extremely desirable, as true Mint State examples of this date rise
greatly in price. This piece is bright and lustrous, showing just a
hint of rub on the central shield.Ex. RLM Collection (Heritage Auction 3024, April 2013, Lot 23249)
Struck in the province of Vila Rica, where the Portuguese extracted most of the Brazilian gold, this short-lived issue departed from the duodecimal system that included the 12,800 Réis coin as its largest denomination. Believed to be one of, if not the largest gold type ever struck for circulation purposes in Brazil, it is undoubtedly an imposing piece.
