Description

The Very First 6400 Reis Struck in Brazil

João V gold 6400 Reis (Peça) 1727-B AU55 NGC, Bahia mint, KM137, LMB-81 (this coin), Guimaraes-1727.B-1.1 (5 Known). First type, oval shield. This uber rare first year of issue, and from the scarcer Bahia mint (when compared to more abundant Rio issues), is the one piece to hit the market in recent decades; and we note its superiority when compared to the XF piece in the BES (Banco Espirito Santo) Collection, the most complete museum collection of Brazilian and Portuguese gold coins. For exclusive types as such, the avid collector cannot be very picky amidst the alleged 5 known pieces, and yet this example does not let down with its balanced struck and only lightly handled motifs, graced by a light antique-gold tone. An undeniable trophy coin for not only the Brazil type collector, but for a connoisseur of 18th Century gold.

Ex. Heritage Auction 3016 (January 2012, Lot 23412)

The 6400 Réis played a significant role in global trade during the 18th and 19th centuries. Minted in gold and often referred to as the "Brazilian gold coin," it became a trusted international currency due to Brazil's vast gold reserves and its consistent weight and purity. Widely circulated in Europe, North America, and the Caribbean, the 6400 Réis was accepted in major trading ports and frequently melted down or re-stamped by other nations. Its reliability and gold content helped establish Brazil as a key player in the global economy, bridging trade between the Old and New Worlds during the colonial and early post-colonial periods.
