Classic Rare Issue of Maria and Pedro

Maria I & Pedro III gold 6400 Reis 1777-B, KM199.1, Russo-482, Gomes-28.01, AU Details - Repaired NGC. Strong details, cleaned. 1777 was the last year of rule of Jose I and very few coins of the date were struck at both Rio and Bahia mint.

Maria Francisca Isabel Josefa Antonia Gertrudes Rita Joana (Maria I), born on December 17, 1734, was the eldest daughter of King Jose I of Portugal.  Given Jose I's inability to successfully sire a son, Maria, as a teenager, was decreed the Princess of Brazil and the heiress to the throne of Portugal.  In 1760, Maria married her uncle, Pedro Clemente Francisco José António, son of former King Joao V (1706-1750). Together, Maria and Pedro had six children.

Upon the death of King Jose I on February 24, 1777, as decreed, Maria Francisca, assumed the thrown as Maria I, Queen of Portugal.  Upon her accession to the throne, her husband Pedro took the title King Pedro III of Portugal. Until his death on May 25, 1786, Maria and Pedro would jointly hold the throne.
