Key Date of Maria and Pedro

Maria I & Pedro III gold 6400 Reis 1777-R, KM199.2, Russo-459, Gomes-30.01, AU Details - Surface Hairlines NGC. Strong overall AU with light old cleaning. A near mint state reverse and wide strong rims.

King Jose reigned for 27 years and passed late in February 1777 passing the throne to his daughter and son-in-law Maria and Pedro. The general rule for pruduction of coins was that throughout the year of death of a monarch, the kingdom would continue to strike coins with the "old" king and in the following year begin with the "new". 6400 Reis featuring the bust of Jose I continued to be struck in 1777 (in fact it is one of the most common dates) but there was also a very small mintage towards the end of the year of Maria and Pedro. History tells that Princess Maria disapproved of most of her father's actions and stands as head of government. And what better way to announce a new kingdom than producing new coins?
