Rare Copper Trial Pattern of Pedro I

Pedro I copper Trial 6400 Reis 1823-R, KM-Pn25var., Russo-E025a, AU58 Brown NGC. Plain edge. An important trial of the largest circulating denomination from the first year of regular gold coinage under Pedro I and according to notes by Dr. Monteiro, one of only two extant in copper with a unique piece known in silver. While often considered a pattern, the term "trial" or "off-metal" striking is technically more fitting, as a comparison of this copper striking and the circulating gold type shows they were struck from the same die. The surfaces of this magnificent piece display quite impressively, with smooth chocolate-brown color in the centers. Around the legends, verdigris is nestled into the lettering and a touch of reddish coloration makes an appearance. Noticeable marks are limited and any wear is virtually invisible. The strike, unlike that on many of the examples intended for circulation, has been carefully executed and is fully rendered. For the historian of Brazilian coinage, one can think of few more powerfully illustrative pieces, and as such, this offering presents itself as one that should not be passed up.
