Pedro II pair of commemorative Medals 1848, VC-42, Meili-26. Obv.: bust of Prince Afonso facing right. Rev.: funeral casket, legend. Struck in memory of the Imperial Prince and heir apparent Dom Afonso (February 23, 1845 - June 11, 1847) who died from epilepsy at only 2 years old. Two pieces, as follows: struck in white medal (XF, minor edge bumps, 46 mm, 55.07 grams) and copper (Mint State, 46mm, 44.15 grams). A very scarce and interesting pair. Neither Cavalcanti nor Meili identify the obviously talented engraver who signed "E. S. S. G.".
