Pedro II trio of Calendar Medals 1867, VC-48, Meili-35. Obv. bust of Pedro II, facing left. Rev. calendar for 1867. Engraved by Luster. Cristian Luster (Risberghus, Denmark, 1822 - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1871) was referred to by noted scholar Kurt Prober as the most talented engraver that Brazil had, and pieces such as the present medal seem to confirm this. His life was interesting, to say the least: after winning first prize in the H. K. Hojhed Arveprins Ferdinans Haandverkskole academy, he entered the engraving academy in 1844 but was captured in 1849 and sentenced to 8 years in prison after being arrested as part of a counterfeit operation. The forged coins were 5 Skilling dated 1788 (around 2500 pieces!) and 32 Rigsbankskilling dated 1842. Engraver Christopher Krohn of the Danish Royal mint reportedly testified that the forgeries were impossible to detect unless a thorough examination was performed. He was released in 1852 and headed for Brazil, where he was appointed as Engraver of the mint on December 1863 and later as Chief Engraver by Decree of August 11, 1869. The present piece ranks among his more esteemed creations. Three pieces, as follows: struck in silver (attractively toned Mint State, a couple of very minor edge bumps, 41mm, 24.44 grams), copper (About Uncirculated, some ink staining, 41mm, 29 grams) and wood (Mint State, 41mm, 5.25 grams). All rare, the silver piece particularly so, an exquisite testimony to Luster's engraving talent.
