Extremely Rare Early Brazilian Gold Coin

Pedro Regent Prince 4400 Reis c/s over Portuguese 4 Cruzados (Joao VI), Friedberg-10, Russo-15, AU50 NGC, Extremely Rare. Legislation was passed by the Portuguese crown in 1668 to authorize the counterstamping of "4400" on Portuguese 4 Cruzados to make the coins legal tender in Brazil. The first Brazilian mint would not open for another 30 years and the Portuguese were trying to regulate the coins that circulated in their South American colony. It is truly amazing that such an early issue that was counterstamped twice can still be found in AU condition. This is also the first coin of this issue that we've seen coming up for sale and know of only one other in the collection of the Espirito Santo Bank in Lisbon (but not nearly as nice as the piece presented here). An outstanding early gold piece of infant Brazil.
