    Description

Republican Medals Quintet, Lot of five medals, as follows:

    - VC-194. Lead, Mint State. Struck in 1894 in honor of American president James Monroe and the Monroe Doctrine.

    - VC-262. Silver, About Uncirculated, old collector's sticker on reverse. Struck in 1906 for the 3rd American International Conference, held in Rio de Janeiro between July 23 and August 23 of that year.

    - VC-257. Silver, About Uncirculated. Struck in honor of Santos Dumont's 1901 win of the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize. The latter was the prize offered by Henri Deutsch de la Meurthe to the first machine that would complete the round trip between the Aero-Club de France in Saint Cloud to the Eiffel tower and back in less than 30 minutes. The prize amounted to 100,000 francs, a hefty sum in the period. Santos Dumont's achievement is frequently considered the first successful flying trip and was all the more astonishing since he built the airship Santos-Dumont 6 himself.

    - KP-120-23P. Silver, About Uncirculated. Struck in 1951 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Santos Dumont 1901 achievement (see previous item in this lot).

    - KP-32-8P. Silver, About Uncirculated. A plaquette struck in 1896 to commemorate the death of Carlos Gomes (1839-1896). Gomes was the first New World composer to be successful  in Europe, and the only one to achieve this during the golden age of opera in the 19th century.

    - VC-197. Silver, About Uncirculated, small collector's sticker on reverse. Struck in 1904 to commemorate the incorporation of the Alto Jurua department to Brazilian territory per the treaty of Petropolis signed in 1903 between Bolivia and Brazil. Bolivia received 2 million sterling pound and other compensations for this loss.

The plaquette rare and one of reportedly 10 pieces struck. The others scarce to very scarce. An attractive group of infrequently encountered items.
