    Description

George V tin-brass Pattern Shilling 1920-G F12 NGC, Gaunt & Sons mint, FT- (but cf. FT51 for type), KM-. Struck on a large flan. Ex. R. J. Ford Collection. From the collector: "Believed to be unique - unlisted. An experimental piece struck on a larger and heavier flan than normal with a different metal composition - a copper-zinc alloy with a trace of tin and nickel. The adopted standard was 79:20:1 comprised of copper, zinc and tin." According to the collector's notes, this piece weighs 6.27 grams, whereas the shilling of the standard series weighs 5.66 grams. Evenly worn but problem-free. Based on our research, the collector is mistaken as to the rarity of the piece, as there are apparently two other known examples (one in the Diana Collection (Baldwin's 58, lot 1424) and one in the Arielle Collection (Baldwin's 85, lot 3155)). Nonetheless, this is an exceptionally rare piece and very likely one of just three known. This is still an exciting opportunity to acquire one of the most important pattern shillings of the entire British Commonwealth series!
