Description

George V tin-brass Specimen 2 Shillings 1924 SP64 NGC, Royal mint, FT17 var. (unlisted as specimen), KM13b var. (same). Beautifully toned; indeed, tin-brass is not commonly used as the metallic composition in coins, and so one rarely sees such an interesting brownish-tan toning. Apparently a very rare date for specimens; the only other example that has sold publicly in at least a decade was the Arielle Collection piece (Baldwin's 85, September 2013, lot 3198), which hammered at 540 GBP ($868 at the time). It should be noted that that piece had some scattered surface hairlines and a few somewhat distracting milky toning spots; almost certainly not as eye appealing as the coin on offer here.

Metal: Tin-Brass
Mintage: 1,500,000
