    Description

George VI nickel-brass Proof Shilling 1938 PR67 NGC, Royal mint, FT66A, KM23. Ex. H.W.L. Evans of the Royal Mint. A very rare proof shilling from 1938- we can trace only two other examples that have sold in the past decade; the Diana Collection had one (Baldwin's 58, lot 1432 - which the description noted as having an "obverse fingerprint") that sold for 220 GBP hammer ($408), as well as the Arielle Collection (Baldwin's 85, lot 3170), which hammered for 500 GBP ($803). The Brilliant Gem on offer here is almost certainly significantly higher grade than either of those two specimens, with flawless surfaces and original red coloration; it looks as though it was set aside immediately after striking until it was encapsulated by NGC 80 years later (which very well may be the case since it comes from a Royal Mint employee).
