Splendid 1913-S Type Two Buffalo Nickel
Tied for Finest Certified
1913-S 5C Type Two MS67 NGC. The 1913-S Type Two Buffalo
nickel, with the buffalo standing on a thinner mound of grass with
a straight line at the base, is the first acknowledged series key,
and one that is popular and available in all grades, from the many
low-grade circulated pieces available at coin shows to the Gems
that are occasionally available, albeit for a price. In MS67 grade, however, this piece is tied with a half-dozen other examples at NGC and PCGS combined for the finest certified (and likely the finest known, as it is extremely unlikely that there are any uncertified examples so fine remaining undiscovered, ungraded, and unauthenticated of this elusive issue). Splendid lilac and hazel low points accent the golden high points on the obverse, and the reverse offers lilac and golden coloration throughout. The coin appears to be an early die state, as it lacks the "beard" die clash that so many later examples show. Both sides are expectedly free of distractions, and the strike is excellent for the issue. Census: 6 in 67, 0 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N4719)
