Description
1914-D Buffalo Nickel, MS67+
Early Semikey Issue
The Sole Finest Example Certified
1914-D 5C MS67+ NGC. Although the 1914-D is a well-produced
issue, relatively few high-grade pieces were saved at time of
mintage. It was the 1930s before mintmark collectors sought highly
graded pieces by mint, when most of the 3.9 million-piece mintage
were well-circulated. This is one of the few Superb Gem survivors,
with lively, sharply struck surfaces that host lustrous,
nickel-gray surfaces accented by pale-gold and deep-lilac hues. An
interesting T-shaped die crack sits on the rim above ERT in LIBERTY
and extends downward between R and T. A pair of faint, internal die
cracks -- one on the obverse above the braid knot and the other on
the reverse across the bison's lower left shoulder -- bear witness
to the hard nickel planchets that injured the dies. Neither PCGS
nor NGC has certified a numerically finer example. Census: 3 in 67
(1 in 67+), 0 finer (6/22).Ex: Central States Signature (Heritage, 4/2020), lot 3671.(Registry values: N4719)
