Description

Elusive 1916 Doubled Die Obverse Nickel, An Attractive AU50 Example

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse AU50 PCGS. The otherwise slate-gray surfaces yield to more lively pastel undertones as the coin turns into the light. The ample remaining definition is suggestive of an above average strike, and the doubling is readily evident on the digits in the date. Both sides are uncommonly abrasion-free for a Nickel that saw 10 points of wear.
Although first published in the July 1962 edition of The Numismatic Scrapbook Magazine, the 1916 Double Die was not widely known to the collecting community until the mid-1970s. Of the perhaps 100-150 coins believed extant, only 10 examples are Mint State (per Lange, 2000). (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)

    Weight: 5.00 grams

    Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
