    Description

Rarely Seen 1916/16 Nickel, AU55 NGC

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse AU55 NGC. FS-016. The 1916/16 nickel is very likely the rarest coin of the 20th century that is generally included as part of a regular U.S. series. It is rare in all grades, and especially challenging in AU and Mint State. Many other issues are called rare and many have low mintages, but the Doubled Die 1916 is a coin that simply does not show up with any regularity--it is a coin that we do not consistently have an example of in our auctions. The surfaces on this piece show muted light gray patina with most of the luster still present but subdued from the coloration. Softly struck, as always, there are no obvious or detracting abrasions on either side, and just a bit of friction over the highpoints of the design. Population: 16 in 55, 11 finer (2/05).(#3931) (Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)

    Weight: 5.00 grams

    Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
