Description

1916 Doubled Die Nickel, Choice AU
    Nicely Toned, Good Remaining Luster

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse AU55 PCGS. CAC. FS-101. Pulling no punches, David Lange in The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels calls the 1916 Doubled Die Buffalo nickel "one of the most desirable varieties in this or any series." The overall popularity of the Buffalo nickel series among collectors as a whole only serves to compound the desirability of the 1916 Doubled Die, by far the series key for any collection that includes varieties. While still not as well-known as the 1937-D Three Legged Buffalo--and what other U.S. coin variety is?--the 1916 Doubled Die is immeasurably rarer in any grade. The number of certified 1916 Doubled Dies at both NGC and PCGS, in all grades, is about 2% of the number of 1937-D Three-Legged nickels. This is an especially attractive, well-struck example of this key Buffalo nickel. Much luster remains on each side and there is significant gray and blue patina throughout.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)
