    Description

1916 Doubled Die Obverse Nickel, AU55
    Attractive, Original, Lightly Toned

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, AU55 PCGS. This popular Buffalo nickel variety was first discovered in in the early 1960s, though knowledge of its existence only became widespread a decade later - remarkable given the prominence of the die doubling on the date, chin, throat, and feathers. The 1916 Doubled-Die Obverse has entered the numismatic canon as arguably the most important rarity in the Buffalo nickel series since it was first included in the Guide Book in the late 1970s. Approximately 400 examples survive in all grades, and they are eagerly sought-after by series specialists. This is a higher-grade example that retains generous remnants of mint luster and shows light, even patina over each side. The strike definition is soft over the high points, as one would expect, but there are no mentionable abrasions on either side. Sure to be a popular coin with bidders. Population: 20 in 55, 12 finer (10/16). (NGC ID# 2TSS, Variety PCGS# 145628, Base PCGS# 3931)

    Weight: 5.00 grams

    Metal: 75% Copper, 25% Nickel
