    Description

    1916 Doubled Die Nickel, XF40
    Classic Major Doubled Die

1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse XF40 PCGS. FS-101. Sometimes called the "1916/1916," particularly in the past when there was less understanding of doubled dies. While the date is the most obvious point of doubling, the effect also is clear all around the borders of the portrait. This is a lightly circulated example of the variety, primarily steel-gray with scattered golden-brown overtones. Both sides show shallow abrasions and pinscratches; the 19 of the (main) date shows a cut near the top, while on the reverse a pinscratch travels from the back of the bison's shoulder wool to just below the tail and on to the nearby rim. Population: 7 in 40, 57 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2TSS, PCGS# 3931)
