Description

1917-D Nickel, Sharply Struck MS67
The Only Superb Gem Certified

1917-D 5C MS67 ★ NGC. This is the finest 1917-D nickel certified by either of the major services. Not only is it the only MS67, but it also a cut above the "average" MS67 with the addition of the Star designation. As David Lange points out in his 2006 series' reference, the main problem with the poor definition on the usually seen 1917-D stems not from weakness of strike, but from die erosion. Evidence of this die erosion is more easily seen in the recesses of the design more than the usually expected metal flow at the margins. Some slight evidence of the die erosion he speaks of can indeed be seen in the recesses on this piece, but it is slight. That leads us to suspect this coin must have been struck midway through the life of these overused dies. The striking definition is remarkably strong on each side with no singular areas of weakness. The bright, satiny mint luster has taken on a lovely accent of blue and rose toning that is equally balanced over each side. As one would expect, there are no mentionable abrasions present.
