Description
Elusive Premium Gem 1918 Buffalo Nickel
1918 5C MS66 PCGS. David Lange's The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, second edition (2000), has some interesting and cogent comments about this issue in high grades: "1918 is a scarce coin in all grades Fine and better. Despite its high mintage, nice circulated coins are frustratingly elusive, due in part to a chronically poor strike. Mediocre Mint State coins are often available, but not so Gem pieces. The total certified Mint State population is surprisingly low." This lovely, high-end Premium Gem example has light silver-gold patina with blazing luster. While the strike is far from full, it is much better than typically seen, especially on the reverse, which features a bold horn, good detail on the hair at the bison's shoulder, and a nearly split tail. PCGS has graded seven pieces finer (8/06).From The Troy Wiseman Collection.(Registry values: N2998)
