Description
Notable AU53 1918/7-D Nickel
1918/7-D 5C AU53 NGC. FS-101, formerly FS-016.5. Some coin collectors (and the occasional numismatist who should know better) believe that the so-called "wartime overdates"--the 1918/7-D Buffalo and 1943/2-P Jefferson nickels, the 1942/1-P and D Mercury dimes, the 1918/7-S Standing Liberty quarters--are the result of reengraving, a digit for the later year over that of the earlier--as was actually done at the Mint from the late 19th century until around 1900. But the real result is a dual-hub error, in which two working hubs (raised surface) with differing final digits were mixed up between annealings or work-hardenings of a single working die (incuse surface). This is the source of the overdates from the early to middle 20th century. the same phenomenon was also responsible for the 1960 Large Date over Small Date and Small Date over Large Date cents.Such occurrences are now all but impossible. Modern Mint technology employs a system of "indexing keyways" or notches on the perimeters of working hubs and dies, to prevent them from mating together incorrectly. The keying system is changed every year to prevent incorrect hubs and dies from being used or combined accidentally.
Such technology was not in place in 1918, however, which permitted the creation of this famous Denver overdate. Both sides of the AU53 representative offered here are sharply detailed, aside from the worn and slightly weak high points. Both sides are richly toned gunmetal-gray with aspects of violet and gold, and soft luster filters through. A noteworthy coin in all respects.(Registry values: N4719)
